[RE-UP] NINO FERRER

NINO FERRER
METRONOMIE (1971) / VERITABLES VARIETES VERDATRES (1977)
320 KBPS

In 1970 Ferrer returned to France, where he started working on what he perceived as his first "real" album. Serving brooding prog rock accompanied by more personal lyrics, Métronomie was co-created with long time friend Bernard Estardy.
Though the album went nowhere commercially, its not-so-representative leadoff track, "La Maison Près de la Fontaine," proved a huge mainstream success in France. This apparently irritated Ferrer, whose growing contempt for show business led him to view it as the umpteenth misconception of his artistic vision.
With time, Métronomie became a cult album whose progressive/psychedelic sweetness is still as fresh as it was when it was first released.
Véritable Variétés Verdâtres is not of the same caliber. Though it's not a bad album it certainly isn't as ambitious as Métronomie. Still, Nino's worst is better than what most other 70s mainstream French artists could produce and since VVV is not Nino's worst it has enough good moments to content the music lover.
May this double set serve as an intriduction to an artist too often seen as "the funny guy" because of his 60s hits "Mirza" and "Le Téléfon". A dire misconception of Nino Ferrer's work.

JACQUES HIGELIN

JACQUES HIGELIN
COUP DE FOUDRE (2010)
320 KBPS

Cigarette in mouth, banjo in hand, grey hair in the wind, here's Jacques Higelin again. We had to wait four long years to finally hear the returning adventures of the last great poet of French chanson, four long years well spent with "Amor Doloroso" and the live album which followed.
Higelin will be 70 this fall and it doesn't show. Sure, his voice has aged but like a good wine benefits from the passing of time, Jacques' voice has found new depths to move or entertain us.
Coup de Foudre, his new album, is as fresh as can be, joyous too. It's not as rock as his 70s album were but, then, who cares. With instruments such as a banjo, a piano, a trumpet (etc.) and melodies that immediately catch your ear, Higelin has managed, once again, to prove he still is one of the strongest forces of a French scene that owes him so much.
And then, there's the lyrics, never forced, little moments of lives Master Jacques seems to have collected and put on paper with wit and grace.
May Mister Higelin live a long life and give us many other albums, we so need him.

MATHIEU BOOGAERTS

MATHIEU BOOGAERTS
I LOVE YOU (2008)
320 KBPS

With Mathieu Boogaerts it's expect the unexpect. While he debutes mixing african rhythm to his unique blend of indie pop, folk and chanson, the music of Mathieu Boogaerts evolved, album after album, towards an easier/poppier definition of his own sound culmulating with Michel, an album that, as the artist states himself was the end of a cycle for him.
And now I Love You... It's both a back to basics and a step ahead for Mathieu. Back to basics as he regrouped on his prime minimalism and found back his original quirky sound. A step ahead as, for the first time, Mathieu flirts with some sort of dadaist avant-garde not unlike what an Albert Marcoeur is able to produce (check "Chappe de Béton" for example).
This album largely disappointed those who expected Mathieu to dig a little deeper in the melodious approach of Michel and put a smile on the faces of those, like me, who missed his original quirkiness. Now, it's up to decide what team you play with.

PINK MARTINI

PINK MARTINI
HANG ON LITTLE TOMATO (2004)
320 KBPS

It would be easy to liken Pink Martini's music to the lounge and swing revivals of the '90s. However, the 12-piece mini-orchestra's mix of jazz, classical, Latin, and vocal pop sounds more organic than the work of, say, Combustible Edison. Like the Squirrel Nut Zippers — who were always more than just a straightforward swing revival band — Pink Martini do more than just rehash their influences; by dabbling in different sounds that they love, they've come up with their own. And even on the most theatrical moments of their second album, Hang On Little Tomato, such as the Yma Sumac-meets-chamber jazz of "U Plavu Zoru" or the smoky Italian ambience of "Una Notte a Napoli," a lot of genuine sentiment shines through. Though most of Hang On Little Tomato — named after a vintage Hunt's Ketchup ad — consists of originals, a few well-chosen covers stake out Pink Martini's sonic territory: the festive "Anna (El Negro Zumbon)"; Villa-Lobos' "Song of the Black Swan"; a downright swellegant version of "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love"; and "Kikuchiyo to Moshimasu," which features Hiroshi Wada, the slide guitarist who played on the original recording of the song. Amid all the multiculturalism, Hang On Little Tomato emphasizes the French and Cuban elements of Pink Martini's sound, with "Dansez-Vous" and the lovely "Autrefois" nodding to the former, and the ever-so-slightly mischievous ballad "Lilly" tipping its hat to the latter. The album's moods are almost as wide-ranging as its sounds, spanning the innocence of the title track's '30s pop and the Bacharach-esque sweetness of "Clementine" to the world-weary "Veronique" to the smoky romance of "Aspettami." A more full-fledged album than the band's debut Sympathique, Hang On Little Tomato offers a charmingly popular approach to music.

JEAN-LOUIS MURAT

JEAN-LOUIS MURAT
TRISTAN (2008)
320 KBPS

Jean Louis Murat, one of France's most prolific singer/songwriters, manages to make French language sound good with melodies originating from his unconditional love of artists such as Neil Young or Bob Dylan. On his previous album, he dealt with the words of Charles Baudelaire (and the musics of Léo Ferré), here, he gives us his own version of Tristan & Iseult which is not an easy task but, then, Murat doesn't like it when it too simple. Do not expect something sounding like a musical, Murat remains Murat and, with influences so firmly rooten in rock and folk, he does something unlike what anybody else would have come up with. Tristan is a magnificent and graceful album which does not feature a single potential hit but flows so well I dare you not to listen to it in full. We all need more artists like Jean-Louis Murat, artists that are able to convey depths through emotions without sounding pretentious or vain.

[RE-UP] ARNO & THE SUBROVNICKS

ARNO & THE SUBROVNICKS
WATER (1994)
320 KBPS

This album is not an Arno album and shouldn't be considered as such. It didn't get much praise from the critics when it was released and went almost unnoticed by the potential buyers. This may come as a surprise when considering Arno's reputation even in 1994 but one has to remember this was, for the Belgian singer/songwriter, a recreation from his solo career, and a good one at that!
Reuniting with some old friends from the TC Matic era, Arno has cooked a broken down rock and blues album which bears the influence of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Ian Dury. Yes, I know, that's quite an impressive list and the album lives to it.
True the production of Mike Butcher (better know for his work on Black Sabbath's Sabotage) helps pack it up nicely but it's Arno's talent that inhabits this electric feast and turns it into a work of Art. Not an easy one for sure, but certainly an album which will put a few smiles on a few faces.

SANSEVERINO

SANSEVERINO
AUX BOUFFES DU NORD (2008)
320 KBPS

Recorded in June of 2008 in Paris, this double live displays and the tricks and shops of chanson/gypsy jazz phenomenom Stéphane Sanseverino. On two discs you have the tasty and lively introduction to something that pays tribute to both Django Reinhardt and Charles Aznavour while remaining something quite unique. Sanseverino remains one of the most interesting and appealing voices of the new chanson that hit France a few years ago and he demonstrates here that he is, above all, a great "live animal". And, with covers from Yves Montand, François Béranger or Les Wampas, it's a delight from start to finish. Try it.

MIKE PATTON

MIKE PATTON
MONDO CANE (2010)
320 KBPS

Mike Patton is about as predictable as the mood swings of someone with a severe case of bipolar disorder. The prolific Faith No More frontman is releasing Mondo Cane, via his own Ipecac Records, on May 4. It's not just another Patton project; it's a collection Italian oldies, which shouldn't surprise Patton disciples, since he was married to an Italian artist and is said to be fluent in the language.
Mondo Cane features as 40-piece orchestra, a choir and back- up band. Patton sings a host of Italian-language songs from the '50s and '60s. The disc also features a several covers: Blackmen's "Urlo Negro," which was recorded in the '60s and is about the struggle for civil rights; Gino Paoli's "Senza Fine," which was also recorded by Connie Francis four decades ago; and "Deep Down," written by Ennio Morricone for the 1986 film, Danger: Diabolik.

JP. NATAF

JP. NATAF
PLUS DE SUCRE (2004)
320 KBPS

Four years after his band - Les Innocents - called it quits, JP Nataf finally released his debut solo album. With guests such as Kim Fahy of the Mabuses, Bertrand Bonello (director of "Tiresia" and "Le Pornographe"), Albin de la Simone (and a few others) it was meant to be a major pop event in France. Sadly, if the music on "Plus de Sucre" (More Sugar) is indeed a pop feast not unlike what JP's previous band used to deliver, the success didn't come. Maybe his music is too subtle and melancholic to seduce the masses, maybe is it just bad luck... Anyway, this album never got the success he deserved. So, if you like French pop that has something between the ears, don't look any further, "Plus de Sucre" is for you.

CLAIRE DITERZI

CLAIRE DITERZI
TABLEAU DE CHASSE (2007)
320 KBPS

Tableau de Chasse is Claire Diterzi's second album and, despite being as far as can be from progressive rock it's a concept album. Actually, the idea behind the 12 songs is quite appealing: each track is Claire's musical vision of a painting, sculpture or art installation. Musically, Claire Diterzi has crafted a clever and entertaining mix of chanson, pop and electronica lead by her voice and two backing singers with a background consisting of percussion, drum machines, strings, horns, samples...and more as Miss Diterzi has no limitation as to what is useful for the sake of the songs. Add to all this that no bad song is featured on Tableau de Chasse which makes a very pleasant and addictive 38 minutes listen which, though she clearly has a voice of her own, will appeal to fans of Björk, Camille or Emilie Simon.

FRANCOISE HARDY

FRANCOISE HARDY
LA PLUIE SANS PARAPLUIE (2010)
320 KBPS

Four years after her duets album (Parenthèles, 2006) and 6 after "Tant de Belles Choses", Françoise Hardy, THE French pop icon, returns with an album that could easily be summed up as a back to the basics outfit. Indeed, on "La Pluie Sans Parapluie" (Rain Without an Umbrella), Françoise recalls the ghosts of her past fame and produces a genuine pop album. Of course, the arrangements have been updated since the late 60s/early 70s but, still, it's the closest she ever sounded like she used to. To achieve that, she surrounded herself with a team of younger songwriters such as Alain Lubrano (with whom she's been collaborating for about 10 years), La Grande Sophie, Arthur H, Thierry Stremler, The Ben Christophers, Jean-Louis Murat and a few more. The result may not be up to the best she produced but falls pretty close which is more than I've been expecting in 2010. A nice album, really.

PINK MARTINI

PINK MARTINI
SYMPATHIQUE (1998)
320 KBPS

While the cocktail lounge fad has seen more than a few musicians climb aboard as a career move, the members of Pink Martini are no bandwagon-riding aficionados. Fronted by pianist Thomas Lauderdale, Pink Martini is the real article--a band that approaches the music with unwavering seriousness yet never forgets the fun at the heart of it. Sympathique, the band's debut album reveals an incredibly diverse musical vocabulary on the part of frontman Lauderdale. And what singer China Forbes lacks in range and dynamics, she more than compensates for in attack, approach, and a clear understanding of the material. While most of the songs are upbeat, in the hands of Lauderdale and Forbes, "Qué será será," with its dark atmospherics should be rechristened "Qué será noir."

DEBOUT SUR LE ZINC

DEBOUT SUR LE ZINC
DE CHARYBDE EN SCYLLA (2008)
320 KBPS

One of the many bands to appear in France in the late 90s, early 00s with La Rue Kétanou, Les Têtes Raides, Rue de la Muette, Les Hurlements de Léo or Les Ogres de Barback (to name a few) but not the least of them, Debout sur le Zinc was born when two bands (a folk and a rock one) merged. "De Charybde en Scylla" is their 6th full-length where the band displays more of its folkish take on French chanson. As with their previous albums, you've got a clever and entertaining mix of folk, rock, chanson and world music (gypsy and celtic) that both conveys melancholia and happiness perfectly. Those who love this new French scene and want more of it or those curious to hear what it's all about will be well advised to give this one a spin or two, they'll probably not regret it.

PREMIERES LETTRES (2008)
320 KBPS

Here comes a new voice in the French scene. One that has everything to content those who like Chansons à la French and where influences from "Great Old Ones" (Barbara, Brel, Ferré) can be found, in a modern fashion that is.
The delicacy of L's voice and melodies fits well songs which have more layers than you'd initially think. The arrangements are kind of pop/rock oriented even if fado, classical music or jazz are part of this new-girl-in-town's musical universe.
Be one of the first to get a taste of L's talent on this sweet mini-album. Omens are she's going to be big quite soon.

JULIETTE

JULIETTE
LE FESTIN DE JULIETTE (2002)
320 KBPS
Juliette could be described as one the last survivors of classic French chanson only, she's too young to be a survivor. Nevertheless, I cannot count her as one of the new French chanson artists. She's too much of a maverick compared to this scene and possesses something that reminds me of the great tragedians of the "chanson réaliste" (Piaf, Damiah, Fréhel) with an humour that could be inherited from Charles Trenet or Bobby Lapointe. If that definition is more fitting to what Juliette is, it's still not totally accurate as she really is a beast of her own kind. Suffice to say those who do not yet know her yet but who want to dig depper into the "French sound" would be well advised to check this 2002 release, her best in my opinion, where her humour, her superior compositional skills do wonders.

STEPHAN EICHER

STEPHAN EICHER
LOUANGES (1999)
320 KBPS

After the commercial failure that 1000 Vies was, mosty because of the electronic textures he used that did not please his audience, the Swiss singer/songwriter Stephan Eicher came back with an album which gives us a solid return to the sound developped in his most successful opuses, 1991's Engleberg and 1993's Carcassonne. Written in Brittany, recorded in Engelberg and mixed in London with Daniel Lanois' collaborator Malcom Burn, Louanges is a delight for Stephan's fans. With its usual mix of pop, rock, chanson and folk, this album works from start to finish. Whatsmore, Philippe Djian's everyday poetry still fits Eicher's songwriting like a glove. Put it like that, Louanges is a very nice album those familiar with the man's art will delightfully consume and a good introduction for anyone who haven't yet heard what he is capable of.

BOURVIL
BOURVIL (1997)
320 KBPS

André Bourvil, born André Robert Raimbourg (July 27, 1917, Prétot-Vicquemare, France – September 23, 1970, Paris) was a French actor and singer best known for his roles in comedies, most notably in his collaboration with Louis de Funès in "La Grande Vadrouille" or "Le Corniaud" as well as many other popular films which helped him establish his reputation both as a comic talent and in more serious roles as in "The Longest Day" or "Le Cercle Rouge".
While most people know him for his acting career, at least outside of France, Bourvil was also a singer and it actually was as a singer that he first entered the artistic domain. His songs altern between comedy and tenderness and he excelled in both. Not a great vocalist, he nevertheless managed to become a popular artist with songs such as "La Tendresse", "Les Crayons", "La Tactique du Gendarme" or "Ballade Irlandaise" among many others. Those interested in classic chanson must try this sweet, if incomplete, compilation.

Fernand Joseph Désiré Contandin (8 May 1903 – 26 February 1971), better known as Fernandel, was a French actor and singer. Born in Marseille, France, he was a comedy star who first gained popularity in French vaudeville, operettas, and music-hall revues. His stage name is the diminutive form of his first name in Occitan.
Unlike Bourvil, his repertoire is mostly comedy-oriented which will make it hard for non-French speakers to get into. Worth a try anyway especially considering the historical value for those who want to learn more about the history of French chanson. And for those who understand "la langue de Molière", there are quite a good laughs to gain on this double set.

ALBERT MARCOEUR

ALBERT MARCOEUR
PLUSIEURS CAS DE FIGURE (2001)
320 KBPS

Compared to the two previous Marcoeur posts here at Moodswings, "Plusieurs Cas de Figure" may come as a surprise to those unfamiliar with Albert's evolution through the years. True enough, it would be quite worrying if a 2001 release sounded exactly like one from 1976 or 1978 and, indeed, this album may have been from a different artist or, at least, from another life of the same artist. Of course, Albert's wacky humour is still here but the music is more relaxed and... accessible. Not to say "Plusieurs Cas de Figure" is for every set of ears, it surely is not, but, for those of us able to stomach the weirdest avant-garde, the most extreme noise barrages it almost sound like Bon Jovi does to a heavy metal fan. That said, Marcoeur's art still bears a real artistic ambition too few French artists diplay and "Plusieurs Cas de Figure" shows that perfectly. If one would want to enter Albert's world, this album would be the easier way to do so.
