KMFDM

KMFDM
NIHIL (1995)
320 KBPS

KMFDM's seventh album, Nihil, finds the band sitting comfortably in the groove it started with 1990s Naïve. At this point, the German outfit has become an industrial musical collective, with various contributing vocalists and musicians coming in and out of the fold, while the nerve center of the group continues to be founders En Esch and Sasha Konietzko. Additionally, the group's ingenious marketing/merchandising skills (using the bold-faced KMFDM logo, idealistic sloganeering, and appropriately simplistic comic book artwork of Brute) have given the band a powerful, iconic image. The anthemic "Juke Joint Jezebel," with its disco-diva vocals (courtesy of Jennifer Ginsberg), remains the band's biggest "hit" to date; it is an enduring and indispensable dancefloor favorite at goth/industrial clubs around the world. Other high points include the politically charged "Terror" and "Disobedience." Throughout the album, there is a core of intelligence which lifts KMFDM above many of their contemporaries. Significant contributions by growling vocalist Raymond Watts and super-tight guitarist Gunter Shulz add new colors to the KMFDM palette, and the overall production skills on Nihil are state of the art. While industrial music has a reputation for being abrasive, KMFDM's sound is actually quite polished and tight, with any real "noise" expertly airbrushed out of the mix. Which doesn't diminish the impact of the material; it merely streamlines the band's attack.

NINE INCH NAILS

NINE INCH NAILS
THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL (1996)
320 KBPS

The Downward Spiral positioned Trent Reznor as industrial's own Phil Spector, painting detailed, layered soundscapes from a wide tonal palette. Not only did he fully integrated the crashing metal guitars of Broken, but several newfound elements — expanded song structures, odd time signatures, shifting arrangements filled with novel sounds, tremendous textural variety — can be traced to the influence of progressive rock. So can the painstaking attention devoted to pacing and contrast — The Downward Spiral is full of striking sonic juxtapositions and sudden about-faces in tone, which make for a fascinating listen. More important than craft in turning Reznor into a full-fledged rock star, however, was his brooding persona. Grunge had the mainstream salivating over melodramatic angst, which had always been Reznor's stock in trade. The left-field hit "Closer" made him a postmodern shaman for the '90s, obsessed with exposing the dark side he saw behind even the most innocuous façades. In fact, his theatrics on The Downward Spiral — all the preening self-absorption and serpentine sexuality — seemed directly descended from Jim Morrison. Yet Reznor's nihilism often seemed like a reaction against some repressively extreme standard of purity, so the depravity he wallowed in didn't necessarily seem that depraved. That's part of the reason why, in spite of its many virtues, The Downward Spiral falls just short of being the masterpiece it wants to be. For one thing, fascination with texture occasionally dissolves the hooky songwriting that fueled Pretty Hate Machine. But more than that, Reznor's unflinching bleakness was beginning to seem like a carefully calibrated posture; his increasing musical sophistication points up the lyrical holding pattern. Having said that, the album ends on an affecting emotional peak — "Hurt" mingles drama and introspection in a way Reznor had never quite managed before. It's evidence of depth behind the charisma that deservedly made him a star.

THE ABSOLUTE SUPPER

COLD MEAT INDUSTRIES PRESENTS
THE ABSOLUTE SUPPER
(1998)
320 KBPS

Swedish label Cold Meat Industry delivers here a 2 cds selection of their catalog. This compiltation is now sold out but, lucky you!, Moodswings had it in stores and is proud to present this collection of previously unreleased material. A healthy dose of Cold Meat Industry's most ominous acts of the label's first 10 years.
The first disk is fanatastic neo-classical. In Slaughter Natives, The Protagonist, Ordo Equilibrio, and Arcana stand out as stunning soundscapes of dramatic pain. The bleak narration of Puissance' "Love incinerate" captures a scene of the apocalypse, literally. All this is not to say the rest of the cd is filler. Listened to in it's entirety, I find myself in corners of my mind long forgotten.
The second half of "The Absolute Supper" taps into the power-noise, experimental, and industrial ambience that has made bands like Brighter Death Now and MZ.412 infamous. Some points of the tracks drag on with loops barely overcoming inertia. Extremely stark. Actually towards the end, the Ildfrost tracks ressemble the directions of early Delerium.
This is absolutely worth the time.

Disc One
1 In Slaugther Natives : INRI... raped by the Cross
2 The Protagonist : Imitation
3 The Protagonist : Zoroaster

9 Desiderii Marginis : Chaos undivided

11 Raison d'Être : The verge of somnolence

2 Frozen Faces : Zyklon B Doll
3 MZ.412 : NBS act1 begravning
4 Megaptera : Don't descecrate the dead

6 Nacht : Svartsinn
7 Archon Satani : A time of ruin
8 Ildfrost : Hearts perturbe

WHITE ZOMBIE

WHITE ZOMBIE
ASTRO-CREEP: 2000 (1995)
320 KBPS

On "Astro Creep 2000," the follow up to White Zombie's breakthrough album (1992's "La Sexorcisto") the group doesn't stray to far from the formula of their previous albums. In fact many of the elements (i.e. tongue-in-cheek thrash on top of industrial metal with growly vocals, ominous horror movie samples, and overtones/themes which are cartoonish yet equally dark) just seem resurrected. Nonetheless, this is probably WZ's best effort. With a "beefed up" sound (which comes as a result of an "everything but the kitchen sink" production job), you'll probably not even notice that the musicianship is good, but not top notch (and it can even be a bit simplistic at times).
Even still, there is plenty to like on "Astro Creep 2000." "Super-Charger Heaven" is probably the catchiest and most well known song on here, but the sexy, R-rated "More Human Than Human" is a close contender. And "Electric Head, Pt. 1" (which has bobbing riffs) and "Pt. 2" are very catchy, as well. Also, "Creature Of The Wheel" and "I, Zombie" have strong, churning riffs, track nine has more powerful, driving guitar work, and "Blur The Technicolor" has catchy, chug and churn riffs, and the album ends with a pounding rhythm and eerily calm vocals.
The bottom line is this album sounds great, and is mighty catchy! I don't recommend it to fans of Nine Inch Nails-esque industrial metal, but definitely check it out if trashy/raunchy, riff heavy, tongue-in-cheek industrial metal is your cup of tea. And, like all of Rob or White Zombie's releases, try not to think too hard on it.

1. Electric Head, Part 1 (The Agony)
2. Super Charger Heaven
3. Real Solution #9
4. Creature Of The Wheel
5. Electric Head, Part 2 (The Ecstasy)
6. Grease Paint And Monkey Brains

SUPERSEXY SWINGIN' SOUNDS (1996)
320 KBPS

Usually remix albums are a horrible thought. Very rarely do they deliver a complete experience and most remixes these days seem to just take one line out of a song and repeat it over a crummy breakbeat. However, Supersexy Swingin' Sounds is more like another interpretation of one of White Zombie's best albums, Astro Creep 2000. All the sings from Astro Creep are remixed here (excluding Creature Of The Wheel and I Zombie) plus a remix of "I'm Your Boogie Man" which originally appeared on the Crow City Of Angels soundtrack. All the mixes on here sound awesome, I don't think there is a track on here I don't like. I pretty much wore out my Astro Creep CD, so this is a new way of listening to it. My favorite remix would have to be the Wine, Women & Song Mix of "El Phantasmo & the Chicken Run Blast-O-Rama" which just almost surpasses it's original (It's also pretty much the theme song of a radio station here). If you are a fan of White Zombie's or Rob's work, I strongly recommend you pick this up. It's not like other remix albums and I promise it won't disappoint.

TREPONEM PAL [REQUEST]

TREPONEM PAL
EXCESS & OVERDRIVE (1993)
320 KBPS

Following their two first albums for Roadrunner Records, French band Treponem Pal keeps exploring the industrial realms on Excess & Overdrive. Everything in this album is an aggressive and frontal assault on the listener's ears and the production task, held by none other than Young Gods' leader Franz Treicher fits the bill perfectly.
Some might find this album a tad monotonous, I'd rather praise it as a monolithic work, a journey into sonic aggression and, tough I prefer the diversity later displayed on Higher, I won't dismiss the qualities of this one. Just keep in mind that Excess & Overdrive bears its name quite well and is, thus, not really something I'd call ear-friendly.
Embarck at your own risk but, if you like industrial rock and/or extreme metal, you might very well be up for a nice surprise.

TREPONEM PAL
HIGHER (1997)
320 KBPS

The French industrial outfit Treponem Pal had been laboring for years in the underground, making hard-edged metal-infused records for a decade before they made their major-label debut with Higher. And that's quite a change of pace for them. Of course, the industrial influences are still here but there's also heavy hints of funk and dub that's been added to spice up their mix.
Producer Sascha Konietzko (of KMDFM) did a good job delivering the baby and from the groovy tornado "Cyberfreak" to the closing cover of "Funkytown" it's a heavy dance party you're embarcking on. Sure, this album is not as influential and essential as Treponem Pal first two albums (released in their time on Roadrunner records) but what it's lost in originality, it gained in efficiency making it one hell of an album and a must hear for those who like to dance 'til their neck breaks.

FAD GADGET

FAD GADGET
GAG (1984)
256 KBPS

The listener knows he or she is in for a surprise after seeing singer Frank Tovey covered in feathers on the front cover. It says something about insanity and madness, yet Tovey stands there with his arms up, embracing it all.
And he does embrace everything on Gag with a wit and humor all his own. The opening track Ideal World is a great synth romp with its loud roar of synthesizers and politically charged vocals. "The sun never shines in an Ideal World" is just a taste of Tovey's cynical verbatim that intrudes in nearly all of Gag's tracks.
Highlights include Ideal World, Collapsing New People, Jump, and the infectious Ad Nauseum, the album's finale, delivering a series of sick, twisted synthesized arrangements (recognizeable in many modern industrial recordings) mixed with Tovey's sardonic commentary about society, aptly summed up by one of Tovey's best lines on the album: "I choke on the gag, but I don't get the joke."
This one's worth it, not only for Tovey's true talent, a mixture of social illness and true ingenuity, but also for the influence this album and Fad Gadget's other works have had on other artists.

THE YOUNG GODS

THE YOUNG GODS
T.V. SKY (1992)
320 KBPS

At the end of the eighties many observers said that rockmusic was dead. Then the Swiss trio The Young Gods introduced their sonic architecture, witch changed the future of rockmusic. The trio only use voice, samples and drums, and yet the make one of the most impressive walls of sound built on the components of tempo, movement and balance. Their 4th album "T.V. Sky" stands, with Nirvana's Nevermind, as the most important and album of the nineties. "T.V. Sky" is the most American influenced album by TYG. Especially the almost 20 minutes long composition "Summer Eyes", shows that The Young Gods in an extreme intelligent way, manage to combine the universe and expression of bands like the Stooges and the Doors with elements from heavy metal, Stravinskij and samples you never thought was from an electronic instrument. If you think that rockmusic doesn't exist any longer, then simply listen to The Young Gods, and that will change your mind.

LAIBACH

LAIBACH
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTARS (1996)
320 KBPS

Jesus Christ Superstars is a little different from the Laibach of the past. The hard industrial feel is still there on several songs but the album as a whole tends to lean towards a more heavy metal feel, lots of explosive guitar riffs and even a less electrical feel. Overall the album is very solid and well produced. The covers are still here (i.e. the title track and even a cover of Prince's "The Cross.") All in all a very good effort from this veteran industrial band from Slovenia.

KILLING JOKE

KILLING JOKE
PANDEMONIUM (1994)
320 KBPS

Killing Joke's hard-edged 1994 release is difficult to classify. It's got the power and darker tone of metal, the complexity of progressive rock, the ear-numbing repetitive riffing of techno and the apocalyptic rage of punk. There's a lot to like about Pandemonium, particularly the title track. "Labyrinth", "Whiteout", "Millenium", and "Mathematics of Chaos" are standouts, though the latter suffers from the near impossibility of trying to fit the title phrase into a chorus. While not exception, it's a solid effort.

THE YOUNG GODS

THE YOUNG GODS
ONLY HEAVEN (1995)
320 KBPS

The Young Gods is one of the most interesting bands nowadays. They escape all boundaries and styles with a mixture of industrial, psychedelic rock and ambient textures that no other band has achieved to make with such brilliance.
It's a pity actually that this band's records are almost out of stock everywhere, cos they have made some of the most innovative and inspired albums of the 90's, even though they are ignored by media.
They have usually recognised as the band that invented sampled music, and even though may be a bit of an exageration, what is undeniable is that they were one of the first and definetely one of the best in handling sampled instruments.
This album is full of good songs, and that's what an album is supposed to contain. All of them are different enough to make the entire listening a very satisfying experience, and similar enough to give it a touch of conceptual unity.
If you ar familiar with the Young Gods, you'll know that with their previous album (TV Sky) they had made the most guitar-based album of their career, in a somewhat Ministry style. well, sort of.
With Heaven Only they combine those guitars with ambient passages and electronic devices.
Some songs are just short sketches ('Outside', 'Gardez les esprits') of no more than 1 minute long. Maybe fillers, it depends, but they are not bad at least.
There are a couple of pseudo-industrial guitar based songs ('Strangel', 'Speed of Night', 'Kissing the Sun') which are very energetic, but never as raw as for example Skinny Puppy or Ministry. They usually have ambient passages which make an interesting contrast with the guitars. The voice is energetic and with personality, but never disgusting. 'Kissing the Sun' is very catchy actually, a very good song.
Other songs are more electronic ('Donnez Les esprits', 'The dreamhouse', 'Lontaine') and are probably some of the best, since the electronics are innovative enough to delight us but not so cold as to kill the emotion transmitted by the melody. In fact, The Young Gods aer very good at melodies, and their songs sound to me very emotional. The most emotional of all is 'Child in a Tree', an acoustic guitar ballad full of melancholy.
And not to forget 'Moon evolutions', a more than 15 minute suit where they remind me of U2 and Pink Floyd with an industrial feeling, very interesting indeed, a song divided into 3 parts with a long ambient beatless passage in the middle.
I'm never sure which album I like best by The Young Gods, and that's a good sign I guess. But definetely Heaven Only is one of my favourite. If you think industrial music is just unlistenable music with distorted voices... or Mansonesque charade... give The Young Gods what they deserve... many listenings. For me, they are nowadays what Can were in the 70's.

THE YOUNG GODS

THE YOUNG GODS
PLAY KURT WEILL (1991)
320 KBPS

The songs may be Kurt Weill's, but The Young Gods delivered one of the most startling, original and powerful albums of the 1990s with these eight cover versions - covers unlike any others. "Salomon Song" veers from dream-like vaudeville to nervous edginess and back again. "Mackie Messer" is the famous Mack-The-Knife routine taken into punk-rock, speed-metal territory ( sampled of course ) with German lyrics intact. Franz Treichler gives one of his greatest vocals on "Alabama Song", omitting pure evil as he snarls "Show us the way to the next little girl..." - sounding like a killer or pedophile before the song is hurled into a thunderous chorus. "Seerauber Jenny" reminds us of the kind of music we might have heard in a Berlin theatre or nightclub in Weimar Republic years, the song descending into an overpowering darkness at its climax. And then there is the utterly haunting and evocative rendition of "September Song".
No one produces music like The Young Gods.

EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN

EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN
THE JEWELS (2007)
320 KBPS

It's quite a surprise seeing this album listed as commercially available since the 'Jewels' were supposedly the exclusive reward for supporters whose subscriptions financed the latest EN album-tracks we received periodically throughout the 'Alles Wieder Offen' sessions. Don't get me wrong, I don't feel aggrieved or betrayed- I was happy to support the innovative business model EN have instituted over the last few years. Their subsequent realease makes no difference to me, and if it helps subsidise further EN activity then that's all to the good. As supporters we got more than 'The Jewels' anyway, we got to see the band at work and to discuss their creative process, vicariously participating in and facilitating production of the album that became 'Alles Wieder Offen'(an expanded version of which supporters received). I would perhaps rather the excellent supporter-only album from phase 2 ('Grundstueck') were made commercially available, but for the dedicated fan who has not participated in their label-less approach to music making and distribution, then 'The Jewels' is worth acquiring.
For a collection of tracks that EN were willing to dispense as subsidiary to the final work, the tracks are better realised than might be expected- all good material, just a little more modest than the album tracks they expect to be critically judged by. Mind you, there are definitely a few here which I consider on a par with tracks from 'Alles Wieder Offen', especially 'Epharisto','Magyar Energia' and 'Ansonsten Dostoyevsky'. Many of the tracks represent experiments with a singular musical and lyrical idea- there are no epic pieces with multiple passages or complex arrangements.
'The Jewels' makes for a great companion piece full of intriguing curios (like 'Am I Only Jesus' or 'Hawcubite'). Blixa Bargeld's enigmatic poetics on 'The Jewels', in both English and German, are particularly compelling. I just feel sorry for the fans who are missing the opportunity to purchase 'Grundstueck' from the previous creative phase.

KILLING JOKE

KILLING JOKE
FIRE DANCES (1983)
REMASTER
320 KBPS

After stalling a bit with their 1982 album Revelations, Killing Joke nearly split up, with lead singer Jaz Coleman disappearing to Iceland in order to "survive the apocalypse." By the time Coleman returned to the band, bassist Youth was gone and replaced by Paul Raven, a perfect fit who would stay on board as the band found its way up the charts over the next few releases. As a reaction to all these comings and goings, this is a decidedly tribal album that opens with a track called "The Gathering," follows it with the "join the mob" anthem "Fun & Games," and features words like "we" and "us" throughout the album. The ultimate communal moment, "Let's All Go (To the Fire Dances)," is also the key track, with guitarist Geordie Walker bouncing between crunching barre chords and a Duane Eddy-on-steroids riff while Raven and drummer Paul Ferguson throb like a veteran rhythm section. Even if Coleman's lyrics are filled with venom as always, he's rounding up allies to fight the system here and considering the idea of connecting with his audience rather than just confronting them. Fire Dances bridges Killing Joke's primal past with their more melodic, accessible future and without compromising any of their thunder.

TREPONEM PAL
WEIRD MACHINE (2008)
VBR 192-320 KBPS

Don't ask me to tell a story about Treponem Pal, I hardly know them with the exception of what happened to them in the 90s.
When I found that new Treponem Pal CD, it reminded of the day when they were playing on French TV show "Nulle Part Ailleurs". That TV show was one of the best talkshow French TV has ever made : interesting guests, always great sketches and some great live performances: Jeff Buckley, Sepultura, Eels or Nick Cave with Kylie Minogue... and Treponem Pal, of course.
I had never heard of them before they played on NPA that night but I liked the music. By the way, Treponem Pal never became famous for their music, unfortunately but for the woman that was dancing as part of their performance. In fact she was a he, of the transgenre kind, and began to masturbating for the camera. That misadventure brought huge problems to the band (but a certain amount of publicity as well) and the French channel Canal+.
This, of course, didn't stop the band to give up music and so they making their own brand of fusion (merging industrial rock, metal, rap and dub) until today's Weird Machine. This album is no masterpiece but really entertainmenting for all those who would like to hear Motörhead and Rage Against The Machine in the same band.

LES TETINES NOIRES

LES TETINES NOIRES

Emmanuel Hubaut aka le Comte d'Eldorado & William Lamy aka Goliam, created Les Tétines Noires in their early teens in the attic of avant-garde artists Joël Hubaut at the begining of the 80s. The duet signs a contract with French alternative label Boucherie Productions to record a cover of the Osmonds' "Crazy Horse" on the compilation "La Relève". With Marcus on basse, Les Tétines Noires release their debut album "Fauvisme et pense-bête" en 1990 mixing new wave/industrial rock and Dadaism which is warmly welcomed by the rock press. A tour of around 60 dates follows that will see them visit Europe and Canada.
En 1992, just after their second album was released, Anthony Perez aka Entonie becomes their new bass player. It's when the live acts from the band became crazy freak shows full of passion and fury. About of hundred of those terrific performances follow in France, eastern and western Europe and in the U.S.A.
Here are the first two albums from this one-of-a-kind formation, a must hear for the curioust music-lovers and the proof, if needed be, that bands like Les Tétines Noires doesn't appear too often on the worldwide rock scene and that their are to cherish and support. Enjoy!

STABBING WESTWARD

STABBING WESTWARD
WITHER BLISTER BURN + PEEL (1996)
320 KBPS

Stabbing Westard's second album, Wither Blister Burn + Peel, is one of the most adventurous and experimental albums in Industrial today. It's ten tracks of power, emotion, and intensity that manages to touch your soul in many different ways. The songs "Shame" and "What Do I Have To Do?" deal with feelings of inadequacy with the opposite sex, and are two of the most powerful songs ever recorded, thanks to the amazing guitar, synth, and above all, the brilliant voice of lead singer Christopher Hall. "Sleep", which depicts the horror of incest, is one of the most traumatic songs ever written. This album goes together very well with Stabbing Westward's newest release, Darkest Days.
It's a shame (no pun intended) that this band gets called a Nine Inch Nails wannabe or rip-off. Stabbing Westward is one of the most original and unique bands in all of Industrial, maybe in all of music. It's not that hard to spot that they're highly influenced by NIN, but it's for sure that they don't rip them off. They're also compared to bands like Filter and Gravity Kills, and that's just wrong, seeing as those two bands combined don't have near as much talent as SW. What's also a shame is that Wither Blister Burn + Peel and Darkest Days are priced so low and collecting dust in record stores. People need to open their eyes to one of the best bands the music industry has to offer.

SHOTGUN MESSIAH

SHOTGUN MESSIAH
VIOLENT NEW BREED (1993)
192 KBPS

Shotgun Messiah started off as a hair metal band, and a pretty good one at that. But with VNB, we see the definitive paradigm of industrial heavy metal. The album itself gives new meaning to both sophistication and aggression, but what Shotgun Messiah has here that makes VNB so superior to everything before it. Shotgun Messiah rocked but nobody knew...

XC-NN

XC-NN
ST (1994)
320 KBPS

XC-NN began as simply "CNN" before the threat of legal action from the news channel forced the trio to alter their moniker. It hardly mattered as the act's self-titled 1994 release came and went, making nary a ripple. The lack of attention they received was a shame as the band's clever combinaison of light industrial rock and indie rock worked pretty well.
This album has been unavailable for years now so, it's your chance to discover a record that should have hit the charts by sadly didn't.
