BAPTISTE TROTIGNON DAVID EL-MALEK
TROTIGNON EL-MALEK HALL PALLEMAERTS
TROTIGNON EL-MALEK HALL PALLEMAERTS
This album is a remarkable display of energy and melody from beginning to end most of the time reminding of a car chase ("Bribs") sometimes indulging itself in the classier, gentler ballad form (the very cleverly titled "In a dream"). Here you have the best of the classic hard bop form mixed with tiny hints of modernity bringing the icing on the cake. Both leaders (Trotignon on piano and El-Malek on tenor and soprano saxophone) share the compositions (half of the album each) without ever disturbing its artistic unity. The two men seem to have stimulated each other's talent and the accompanying rythm section (american bassist Daryl Hall and belgian drummer Dré Pallemaerts) just perfectly complete the team. This is, no doubt about it, a collective work as we can clearly hear the complicity that united those four musicians during the sessions. David El-Malek is, as he use to be, sharp, clear and powerful in his sax riffs but can also be quite lyric when the melody needs it ("Le chemin du serpent"). Facing him with agility, skills, attention and grace, Baptiste Trottignon goes even further than in his previous works in mastering the art of the perfect solo. Resisting is futile! This album goes straight to your heart. It's like going down wild-waters, there's no turning back from this wondrous and preciously put together jazz banquet!
