There is not much I can say about this CD that has not already been said. Jaco Pastorius reinvented the electric bass by this release. The opening track "Donna Lee" is a Charlie Parker/Miles Davis tune played on the bass with conga drums as an accompanying instrument. Right away you know that you are in for something special. All the tracks in the CD are classics. They show Jaco not only as a great bass player but also as a composer.
"Continuum" shows how immaculate his phrasing was on an electric fretless bass, as he makes the bass sing effortlessly. On "Portrait of Tracy" he uses harmonics almost exclusively. One would think that such a technical piece would probably sacrifice melody for showmanship. But Jaco keeps his music upfront and pulls of a classic that has inspired millions of bass players since to incorporate harmonics in their repertoire. His funky roots are evident in "Come on, Come over" with the bass pushing the song forward while providing support. Evey track on here is amazing.
