Jean-François Coen was born in Oran (Algeria) in. His family came to Paris in 1965 where he studied classical guitar with Ramon de Herrera at the Municipal Conservatory. In 1978, he joins the band Modern Guy as their bass player. The following year the band recorded an album produced by John Cale before splitting up in 1981. From 1982 to 1990 he vanished fro the musical scene just reappearing as bass player on Mirwais (ex-Taxi girl) first solo album and with the band Juliette Et Les Indépendants.
His first self-titled solo album is released in 1993 by Columbia (Sony Music) and includes his one and only hit single "La Tour De Pise" of which the video, directed by Michel Gondry, had numerous airplays thanks to its quality and the beauty of the song itself (with backing vocals from female vocalist Robert). The 10 other songs on the album, if they don't equal the beauty of "La Tour De Pise" constitute a beautiful bunch of pop meets poetry moments. The influence from Serge Gainsbourg is quite clear (musically and lyrically) making of Jean-François Coen a pretender a cult status. His second album took long to find its way to the stores and was finally released on Naïve Records en 2004 under the title "Vive L'Amour". Jean-François Coen is the composer and producer of his albums and also writes most of the lyrics.
