Zone Libre is an instrumental project formed by three referential french indie rock musicians, Serge Teyssot-Gay (guitarist with the dormant Noir Désir, Interzone - with the syrian oud player Khaled Aljaramani and a few other recommanded solo projects), Marc Sens (adventurer guitarist who played with Yann Tiersen & Serge Teyssot-Gay accompanying Lydie Salvayre's spoken words) and the ferocious Cyril Bilbeaud (drummer from 90's french underground legends Sloy). Their first album, Faites Vibrer La Chair, is released on T-Rec (label founded by Cyril Bilbeaud and Jean-Charles Versari (of the french band Hurleurs).
Faites Vibrer La Chair is not an easy-on-the-ears opus. It's experimental, arid at times but those three musicians master climates that make it a rewarding experience. Both guitars seem to be taking part in something like an unsane conversation, challenge each other, fight ruthless duels supported by a powerful and precise drumming. Of course some calmer (yet still tense) moments appear here and there to let the listener catch his breath (L’Epidémie Humaine).
But don't let yourself be fooled by quite an apocalyptic description of Zone Libre's music, it's very good music! Certainly not uplifting or happy in any way, its beauty takes time to understand and is sometimes not unlike what Pelican or a quieter Painkiller (Zorn!) delivers. Those who know his one-of-a-kind guitar style will have no problem detecting Teyssot-Gay through these quite slow tempi themes. Here speed does not matter, the climate surely does and Noir Desir's axeman sure is a master in creating musical landscapes of the most haunting kind. Faites Vibrer La Chair is not a record everyone will dig but for those who will, they'll find intense satisfaction listening to this loud, violent and beautiful voyage.
