Wagram proposes this compilation entitled "Jazz manouche". One more as there are plenty ? Sure not! It would have been easy to gather some of Django Reinhardt's "free of rights" tunes. This double CD is more of a photograph of this gypsy jazz scene as it is these days. Obviously, there's two Django themes, two great classics of his : "I’ll see you in my dreams" and "Nuages", both from 1953 sessions, displaying how incredibly modern his approach of jazz still is. The big names of today's scene are here too: Biréli, Tchavolo, Stochelo, Moreno, Fays, Raffalli, Romane... But there's more as this compilation proposes us more obscure names (and talented ones!): Fapy Lafertin, Martin Weiss, Opus 4, Ninine, Lollo Meier, Paulus Schaffer, Am Ketenes, Titi Demeter... And even some americans who fell in love with the peculiar sound and mood of gypsy jazz and try to make it popular in their country: John Jorgenson and the Hot Club USA.
They even thought of adding Sanseverino who makes his words swing so well on the music or Les doigts de l’homme who can't deny their obvious Django heritage. They thus took the risk of not making it another boring anthology but chose to show how very much alive this music is. A great idea.
Track after track it appears how rich and varied this music, often described as repetitive, is. That helps us understand why it is becoming so popular and universal!
