MARC GAUVIN
MALINE CLOE (1999)
320KBPS
When after several years in various rock bands in Rennes (west of France) Mar Gauvin decides to move to the U.K. he doesn't yet know he'll witness the creation of the Bristol trip hop scene. He meets Jim Barr (Portishead) and become friend with the people behing the mythical label Cup Of Tea. He then records La Balançoire, a song often played before Portishead concerts.
His first album is then logically influenced by what his experience was.. Produced and composed with Jim Barr in the famours J&J Studio (where Roni Size records too) Maline Cloé features many elements of the Bristol scene (from Portishead, Smith & Mighty or Morning Star). Musically, this is a trip hop album (of course!) but its originality lies in the lyrics influenced by Charles Trenet and Serge Gainsbourg which make of this good album the first french sang trip hop opus ever released.
