Singer/actress Eszter Balint first emerged as a member of the avant-garde Squat Theater troupe before making a memorable cinematic debut in 1984 in director Jim Jarmusch's seminal indie film Stranger Than Paradise. From there she seemed to drop out of sight for the remainder of the decade, not reappearing on-screen until 1990's little-seen Bail Jumper. Small roles in The Linguini Incident and Trees Lounge followed as Balint instead focused more and more of her energies on music, and in 1999 she released her full-length debut Flicker.
Given Eszter Balint's background in the New York City downtown scene, it's more than a little surprising that her debut album Flicker conjures not the sprawling urban skronk you'd expect but rather a dusty, lonesome atmosphere firmly rooted in country and folk. At times J.D. Foster's production strives to evoke a T-Bone Burnett-like sound which veers towards textural overkill, but the simplest songs — "Amsterdam Crown," "Halfway to Texas" and "Still" among them — possess a stark beauty and emotional heft.
1. Panic Donut
2. Tattoo Sun
3. Amsterdam Crown
4. Halfway to Texas
5. Cheeseman
6. Motherbear
7. Still
8. Flicker
9. Sweet Nothing
10. Dirt on Your Heel
11. Almost Gone
