DENALI

DENALI
ST (2002)
320 KBPS

Denali takes their name from the Athapascan word for Alaska's Mount McKinley, The highest mountain in North America. The meaning they impart is fairly obvious - cold, remotely desolate, permanent - something that parallels the sound they forge. Since sharing the stage with bands such as The Faint, Pinback, Sparklehorse, Tristeza, Rainer Maria and The Lapse, the band caught the ears of Sparklehorse frontman Mark Linkous who has produced a couple songs. Haunting and undeniably pressing vocals, full and rich guitar/basswork...this album is like making love when you are old enough to do it well. Denali pulls at feelings of isolation while softly lulling the mind into an abject acceptance and almost peaceful bliss. It at once is everything their name implies and then just as quickly becomes so much more. This music will particularly appeal to those who like Portishead, early-Goldfrapp and stellar indie rock. Great job!
