GEORGE GERSHWIN - AARON COPLAND

GEORGE GERSHWIN - AARON COPLAND

CUBAN OVERTURE - FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN -
APPALACHIAN SPRING (1975/77)
LORIN MAAZEL - ZUBIN MEHTA
LOS ANGELES & CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA

This account of Rhapsody in Blue from Lorin Maazel and the Cleveland Orchestra is brisk, upbeat, full of "big band" bravura. As a pianist, Ivan Davis is no slouch, and he brings off the solo with impeccable flair. At the start of An American in Paris, one feels as though one is right in the street, and the virtuosic playing of the Clevelanders is a delight from start to finish. The analog sound is outstanding, and this disc, with its generous coupling with Copland, receives a top recommendation for repertoire. A very good selection!
