Mehldau creates melodies till now extraneous to cultured music. Mehldau mingles complex and -with certain knowledge- catchy chords and melodies, with tallying dissonance, acrobatic figures, misty pianos, and exalting crescendos, constructing -fluently, but gently taxing your perception of the heard- real art. Mehldau surely proved successful in swerving his style in a new direction, creating LARGO, without abandoning the characteristic feeling that his playing arouses. Compliments must also go to the great musicians that undertook the developing of the project with him. LARGO's orchestrations fit perfectly, rendering an accurately elaborated sound, with that bit of "classicism", that, combined with the drums' rocky groove, creates an altogether unusual sound. ARGO is simply a cool, sort of "Overture" themes, mix . LARGO is something new, and therefore a masterpiece of its own. But, being in some way too "innovative" and "different", it may evoke contrary reaction, and doubts about Mehldau's approach to music. Nevertheless, LARGO is a great piece of art.
