HELLOWEEN

HELLOWEEN
THE DARK RIDE (2000)
320 KBPS

When discussing the power metal greats, Helloween is almost always the first name that comes to mind. These Germans have survived numerous lineup changes, a string of absolutely horrible albums in the 90s that coincided with the metal scene implosion, and a label change when the band was at a low point in their career. Most of the long time members had just left or were already gone for years when the band entered the studio to record The Dark Ride. Who knew this was to be the crowning achievement in Helloween’s career?
The Dark Ride is simply the best album ever put out by Helloween. Period. Andi Deris, the vocalist who replaced Michael Kiske, is not content with being simply adequate; he is outstanding in every aspect. From the soaring highs to the powerful mid range style (which he does best), he puts on an amazing show.
There are so many good songs on here I hardly know where to begin. "Mr. Torture" may have cheesy lyrics, but it’s a fantastic song. "The Departed (Sun is Going Down)" is another fantastic tune, with great riffs and a singalong chorus that you won’t ever forget. "If I Could Fly" is the best known song off this album, and with good reason, it combines the great power metal style with piano and an almost ballad-like approach. "Salvation" is by far my favourite track on the album, it's just a glorious power metal epic that has no equal. The album closer and title track "The Dark Ride" is probably the 2nd best song on the album, with its spooky mad carnival intro and almost progressive movements. Its fantastic and definitely one of the best songs ever penned by the band.
If you don’t own this album already then shame on you, this is essential listening for anybody who appreciates well-written heavy metal in general. The Dark Ride is a landmark album, and an instant classic that will simply get better with time.
