FAITH NO MORE

FAITH NO MORE
KING FOR A DAY, FOOL FOR A LIFETIME (1995)
320 KBPS

I discovered Faith No More, back in 1989, and immediately became addicted to this awesome alternative metal band (though some might argue there's never been that much of a metal edge to this band). The Real Thing was the real thing by then and seeing them live (Prong opening) on that tour only finished to convince me this band had something special going on. Their following, monumental, album, Angel Dust, sure did nothing to convince me otherwise and more concerts still kept me in that state of mind. Angel Dust was just an even better album than The Real Thing (something I seriously doubted was possible). Maybe because Patton, who came just in time to record the vocals track on the already existing recordings of The Real Thing, did take a real part in the composition and arrangement process. Angel Dust wasn't an easy album to digest (Malpractice still isn't an everyday song) but a truly rewarding listening experience and a true real gem.
Three More Years I had to wait for Faith No More's following effort who finally came in an ugly artwork but with terrific music! Where The Real Thing and, even more, Angel Dust were one direction albums, King For A Day... Fool For A Lifetime displayed a great number of genres with great skill and equal talent. Hints of metal were hard to detect on this one maybe because founding member/guitarist Jim Martin had been kicked out of the band before the composition process began (after all he was the only metalhead on board). His replacement was none other than Mr Bungle's axeman Trey Spruance (who later chickened out as he didn't like touring and left the band replaced by roadie Dean Menta). But back to the music! From the punky alternative rock starter, Get Out, to the progressive alternative and gospel inspired finalé, Just A Man, Faith No More explored as many styles as they could master. You wanted soul music? Evidence was there! Jazz related rock? Star A.D.! Something almost bossa? Caralho Voador was the one! Something slightly country? Take This Bottle and a smile on your face! Some indie progressive music? King For A Day was just that! Alternative noise rock? Cuckoo For Caca (with Patton getting Patton-crazy)! The list got on and on and on as no song resembled another!!! Yet, magic was in the air!, King For A Day.. Fool For A Lifetime managed to be a whole as it was a collection of songs too(Andy Wallace, producer, might have been slightly responsible for the miracle...). This album, as you might have understood by now, is my favourite Faith No More release and certainly in the Top 10 of my favourite rock albums more than ten years after it was released.
