The fifth work of SOFT MACHINE announced in June, 1972 "5(Fifth)". Now Robert Wyatt is definitely not taking part in Soft Machine anymore. Wind instruments disappear to be replaced by Elton Dean's sole saxophone. This album was recorded in November, December, 1971 and February, 1972, "Fifth" is, once again, mostly free jazz. One woudl miss the "classic sound" of Soft Machine but it works perfectly displaying crazy yet beautiful music.
