SOFT MACHINE
FOURTH (1971)
320 KBPS
4 (Fourth) was released in February 1971. The saxophone of Elton Dean that became a formal member and the organ of Mike Ratledge feel the tension. The general tone of the album leans towards free jazz. The sound here is less electric. It showcases a clearer Soft Machine though as intricate when it comes to rythms and soli. The suite in what used to be the B side is a psychedelic/free jazz masterpiece. The guest double bass of Roy Babbington is impressive too. Recorded in October and November of 1970.
