So this is truly the age of the new school of old-school metal, then? Hell. Fucking. Yes. White Wizzard is a young band from Los Angeles that looks, quite frankly, a lot like Heathen circa 1989… and they’ve got a sound to match! The opening riff of the title track immediately calls to mind vintage Iron Maiden, forcing the listener to sit up and pay attention. Can they deliver? Oh, they can. And do. In spades. There are definitely modern influences afoot—little touches that call to mind other new-school acts like Black Tide and at least a working knowledge of bands like Nebula and their ilk—but the whole point here is, clearly, the glory of METAL. Metal from a time when men were men, emo wasn’t even a word, and cross-genre pollination didn’t mean a goddamn thing. Metal from an era of singers who didn’t bark or grunt or rap or whine—they were there to fucking SING. This is my kind of metal. No, scratch that. This is MY metal. This is perfect.
