Granted, Les Wampas, and particulary the detuned vocals of Didier Wampas, are an acquired taste. They're also great fun to listen to and a very nice live act.
The band's third album, Les Wampas vous aiment (Les Wampas love you), released in 1990, contained the popular single "Petite fille", whose video was played on French TV, and crowd favorites like "Ce soir c'est Noël" (a personal version of the Christmas Carols, available all year long on stage...) and "Quelle joie le rock'n'roll"; following this album's release, they were signed by the major label BMG.
Their unique (because of Didier's singing) blend of rock and punk got them a well deserved reputation in France and they're one of the only acts from the 80s alternative French rock scene still active nowadays.
A little while after "...Vous aimen'" was released, a shadow was cast across the band for many years when guitarist Marc Police committed suicide in December 1991. Proof that you can play fun rock'n'roll and still be a tortured soul.
