Listening to Silent Witness, no one can guess this album is the work of a French band. All the songs are sung in a perfect english (singer Nicolas Leroux has lived 5 years in London), but, most importantly, French formations usually don't deliver this kind of jazzy athmospheric pop. Nicolas' voice is quite close to that of Jeff Buckley which fits the music perfectly but Overhead are not plagiarists. Where Buckley was clearly rock-oriented, Overhead shines on different territories. Their nostalgia-ridden, sensitive and epic music is quite unique. The musicianship is on par with the compositional skill which makes of Silent Witness a must hear for anyone interested in music that is both subtle and dreamy, vintage and modern.
Sadly, this album didn't get the success it deserved. Seven years after its release, Silent Witness remains one of those obscure gems music lovers love to share. A must try.
