While Gainsbourg gave a jazzy touch to many of his early works, he also was the very first to mix chanson with afro-cuban and african influences. This compilation of recordings from 1959 to 1964 (except for the hit "L'ami Couette" from 1975) witness that, at the time, unique fusion. While many of the songs presented here were originally released on the "Gainsbourg & Percussions" album, there are also excerpts from other albums and from soundtracks which makes of "Couleur Café" a delightful selection of this true genius' love for ethnic rhythms and exotic sounds.
