If you are looking to investigate soul and funk that is not well known, this is a great departure point.
Black Heat were a soul band on Atlantic in the early 70s. They were produced by Joel Dorn, who worked on Roberta Flack's first few albums, and produced Eugene McDaniels masterpiece, Headless Heros of the Appocolypse.
This band, like most in the genre, did not make any major innovations, but they present hard, Hendrix-charged wha wha funk. The songwriting isn't original but well crafted and this record, all Black Heat's albums, will get you up and shaking. Had they come along in 1968 instead of 1971, when straight up funk started to give way to glossier material, they may have been more successful.
Black Heat's records are not essential, but are uniformly exellent, and this first one is highly recommeneded for soul novices and soul experts.
