The idea behind The Electric Pow Wow was to make an album of covers of artists that had influenced Stevie as a musician. It quickly blossomed into something more. Stevie ended up writing some songs in the same vein as his influences and the fun really started. Add to this mix of great songs a cast of musicians including members of Guns n' Roses, Cheap Trick and Parliament Funkadelic and you have something really special.
The Covers:None of these fail to do the song justice. A very eclectic mix of styles.
"You Can't Judge A Book"(Bo Diddley: This was also done as a duet by Hank Williams jr. and Huey Lewis. This version is more faithful to the original and has a country-blues vibe. This track features Ritchie Kotzen on guitars and Rikki Rockett(of Poison) playing the maracas.
"The Grooveline"(The Heatwave):This features vocals by Stevie's Nicklebag bandmate Bernard Fowler and features the godlike basswork of T.M. Stevens. Stevens is one of the finest bass players alive today and can move even the whitest of us to find our inner rhythm. Some serious headbobbing will occur while listening to this, you just can't help yourself! Also has some fun horns by Los unity Horns to liven it up.
"I Was Made To Love Her"(Stevie Wonder):This has Glen Hughes(Deep Purple,Black Sabbath) singing and is an soulful tune that shows just how fine a singer he is. Stevie felt he couldn't do the vocals justice, so he called in Glen.
"I Don't Want To Be With Nobody But You"(Eddie Floyd): Stevie has said that this track is the one that made him want to create this album. It has Ritchie Kotzen on the vocals, guitars and piano. Ritchie recorded one album with Poison and has carved a nice career for himself in Japan. I suggest checking him out, not only is a damn good guitarist, but a fine singer as well. Stevie is on guitars. Los Unity Horns are back.Truly a great song.
"Good To Your Earhole"(Funkadelic): Oh brother, is this a good one! T.M. on the bass, Stevie on guitars and Gary "Mudbone" Cooper of P-Funk on the vocals. Funk at it's finest!
"Too Rolling Stoned"(Robin Trower):Slow, bluesy number with Sass back on vocals, Cheap Trick's Tom Petersson on bass and Velvet Revolver's Matt Sorum(also of The Cult and GnR) on drums.
"Teenage Love Affair"(Rick Derringer): Lustful rockin' number with Zack Wylde cutting loose on the guitar. I would have to say better than the original, it just has more energy.
"Dodo and Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family"(David Bowie): Vince Ruby, Stevie and Sass doing vocals here.
The Originals:
"Too Many Mountains": It is a blues number and vocal duties are shared by Stevie and Sass Jordan. The rhythm section consists of former Ozzy Osbourne bandmates Phil Soussan and Randy Castillo. It also features guitar work by Zakk Wylde and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen.
"I Don't Want To Waste Your Time": Soft, love song. Stevie really shines on vocals here. So much more than just a ballas, one of those that actually sounds heartfelt.
"Trail Of Tears": nice little instrumental.
"Little Things": A fun, upbeat tune about love. Stevie's playing here shows a lighter touch. Stevie has commented that on this song he really tried to blend the music that influenced his playing with his own songwriting style. This feels, to me, like a summer song.
"Wild Ride": Fun, rollicking rocker in which Stevie lets his freakier side loose! This features the original rhythm section of Stevie's band Colourcode.
This isn't the easiest album to pick up these days, luckily for you, it's at Moodswings now. A bunch of pals having fun with music. The love of the music really shines through and makes this an album that will be enjoyed for decades to come.
