After the success of his initial collaboration with French novelist Philippe Djian (1991's Engelberg), Stephan Eicher returned with pretty much the same formula and a killer backing band featuring great session musicians such as Manu Katche (drums, percussion), Pino Palladino (bass) or Sonny Landreth (guitars). The result is a striking success with songs that are still classics of his repertoire (Des Hauts Des Bas, Ni Remords Ni Regrets, Rivière, Manteau de Gloire) and are, obviously the highlights of the album. Yet, the rest is consistent and of good enough quality so that Carcassonne might be considered the finest album in his discography.
Musically, it's a sweet mix of pop, rock and chanson we're having here. Eicher's voice fits the song nicely and, of course, the musicianship is top notch. Recommended.
